Jeldos Baqytbajuly Smetow ( Kazakh Елдос Бақытбайұлы Сметов , Russian Елдос Бахтыбаевич Сметов Jeldos Bachtybajewitsch Smetow * 9. September 1992 in Taras , Kazakhstan ) is a Kazakhstani judoka . He competes in the super lightweight (class up to 60 kilograms). The 2015 world champion won the Olympic silver medal in 2016.

Career

Smetow first won the title at the Junior Asian Championships in Bangkok in 2010 and five months later also the title at the Junior World Championships in Agadir. In 2011 he finished second in the military world championships and won his first world cup tournament in Tashkent. At the Junior World Championships in Cape Town, he won the bronze medal.

In 2013 he won the bronze medal at the Asian Championships and finished seventh at the World Championships in Rio de Janeiro . In 2014 he won the Asian Games and won the silver medal behind the South Koreans with the team. In 2015, Smetow finished fifth at the Asian Championships. In the final of the world championships in the Kazakh capital Astana, two Kazakhs fought for the super lightweight title, Jeldos Smetow won against Rustam Ibrajew .

In 2016 Smetow won the title at the Asian Championships. In the final of the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro he was defeated by the Russian Beslan Mudranow . In 2017 Smetow finished seventh at the world championships . In March 2018 he won the Grand Slam tournament in Yekaterinburg. In 2019 at the World Championships in Tokyo he was defeated by the Japanese Ryūju Nagayama in the quarter-finals , but won a bronze medal through the round of hope.
