Kim Jae-yup (born May 17, 1965 ) is a former South Korean judoka . In 1987 he was world champion and in 1988 Olympic champion in the extra light weight category, up to 60 kilograms.

The 1.72 m tall Kim won the 1983 Junior World Championships. The following year he won the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles in the round of 16 against the Spaniard Carlos Sotillo by Waza-ari. In the quarter-finals he defeated the French Guy Delvingt by a judge's decision, in the semifinals he defeated Edward Liddie from the United States with a Yuko rating. In the final, Kim met the Japanese Shinji Hosokawa , who had won three of his four fights early. In the final, Hosokawa won through Ippon after 1:09 minutes.

At the Asian Games held in Seoul in 1986 , Kim won the final over the Japanese Koji Ono . At the end of 1986 he also won the student world championships by beating Frenchman Patrick Roux in the final . The sporting highlight of 1987 was the World Championships in Essen . Kim defeated Patrick Roux in the round of 16 and the British Neil Eckersley in the quarterfinals. After his semi-final victory over Chatib Khachak from the Soviet Union, he met Shinji Hosokawa in the final, this time Kim won.

In July 1988 the Asian Championships took place in Damascus, Kim won a bronze medal. Two months later, Kim competed at the Olympic Games in front of a home crowd in Seoul . After an opening win against Mohamed Madhar from Suriname in 2:28 minutes, he defeated the Georgian Amiran Totikashvili, who started for the Soviet Union, with a small score in the second round . In the round of 16 against the Brazilian Sérgio Pessoa , Kim won by a referee decision. In the quarter-finals against Helmut Dietz from the Federal Republic of Germany, the fight ended after 3:27 minutes. The semi-final against Patrick Roux was decided by Kim by a small rating, in the final he defeated Kevin Asano from the United States by a Shido rating, i.e. a penalty for Asano. Kim Jae-yup played his last international tournament in 1989 in Leonding, he finished second in the half lightweight division.
