Nikolai Afanassjewitsch Oschegin

Nikolai Afanassjewitsch Oschegin ( Russian: Николай Афанасьевич Ожегин ; * May 4, 1971 ) is a former judoka who started in 1990 for the Soviet Union and from 1993 for Russia . He was world champion in 1995 and fifth in 1996.

Athletic career

The 1.60 m tall Nikolai Oschegin fought in the super lightweight, the weight class up to 60 kilograms. In 1990 he won the final of the Junior World Championships in Dijon against the Cuban Israel Hernández . At the Junior European Championships in the same year he was defeated in the final by the French Thierry Harismendy .

In 1994, Oschegin took third place at the Goodwill Games in Seattle. At the end of 1994 he won the Russian championships. At the European Championships in Birmingham in 1995 , he was eliminated in the round of 16 against the German Richard Trautmann . Four and a half months later, Oschegin and Trautmann met in the quarter-finals of the 1995 World Championships in Chiba and this time Oschegin won. In the semifinals he defeated the Japanese Ryūji Sonoda and in the final the Georgi Wasagaschwilli . This was the first gold medal at world championships for Russian judoka after the collapse of the Soviet Union.

At the European Championships in The Hague in 1996 , Oschegin lost in the semifinals against Georgi Wasagaschwilli and then lost in the battle for bronze against the French Franck Chambilly . Two months later, the 1996 Olympic Games took place in Atlanta . Oschegin lost in the round of 16 against the Japanese Tadahiro Nomura . After three wins in the Hope Round, he lost the battle for bronze against Richard Trautmann after 2:46 minutes.

In 1997 Oschegin lost to the Belgian Cédric Taymans early on , but then fought his way to seventh place in the hope round. At the European Championships in Oviedo in 1998 he lost to the Ukrainian Ruslan Mirsalijew in the semi-finals , and he lost the battle for bronze to the Spaniard Óscar Peñas García . In 1999 Oschegin won again at the Russian championships.
