Cédric Taymans

Cédric Paul René Taymans (born April 11, 1975 in Ixelles ) is a former Belgian judoka . He was runner-up in 2001 and third in 1997.

Athletic career

The 1.67 m tall Cédric Taymans fought in the super lightweight, the weight class up to 67 kilograms. In 1994 he won his first Belgian championship title, more followed in 1995, 1997 and 2001, and in 1998 he was second behind Sven Boonen . In 1995 he was second in the Junior European Championships behind the Spaniard Kenji Uematsu .

At the 1997 World Championships in Paris he defeated the German Richard Trautmann in the quarter-finals and lost in the semifinals to the Japanese Tadahiro Nomura . With a victory over the North Korean Kang Myong-chang Taymans secured a bronze medal. In 1999 he reached the final of the European Championships in Bratislava with victories over Britons John Buchanan and Yulduz Sultanov from Azerbaijan . There he was defeated by the Spaniard Óscar Peñas . The following year he lost at the European Championships in 2000 in Wroclaw in the semifinals against Elçin İsmayılov from Azerbaijan, Taymans won the fight for a bronze medal against John Buchanan. At the Olympic Games 2000 Taymans lost his opening match against Brandan Greczkowski from the United States by Waza-ari.

In 2001 he lost to the French Cyril Soyer in the semifinals of the European Championships in Paris , but won bronze with a victory over the Greek Lavrentios Alexanidis . At the 2001 World Championships in Munich Taymans defeated the Brazilian João Derly in the quarter-finals and the Georgian Nestor Chergiani in the semifinals . In the final he was defeated by the Tunisian Anis Lounifi . The following year he finished fifth at the 2002 European Championships after losing the battle for bronze to Nestor Chergiani. Three years later he reached the semifinals again at the 2005 European Championships in Rotterdam. After defeats against the Austrians Ludwig Paischer and Ruben Houkes from the Netherlands, Taymans finished fifth.
