Manolo Poulot

Manolo Poulot Ramos (born July 28, 1974 in Guantánamo ) is a former Cuban judoka . He won an Olympic bronze medal in 2000 and was world champion in 1999.

Athletic career

The 1.65 m tall Poulot fought in the super lightweight until 1998, in 1995 and 1997 he was Cuban champion in this weight class. In 1994 he won the title at the Pan American Championships. At the Pan American Games in 1995 , he reached the final and won silver behind Canadian Ewan Beaton . In 1996 at the Olympic Games in Atlanta , he lost his opening match against the South Korean Kim Jong-won . At the Pan American Championships in 1996 Poulot won ahead of the Brazilian Alexander García , in 1997 he won the final over the Argentine Jorge Lencina .

In 1998 Poulot won the Cuban championship in the light weight division. At the Pan American Championships he defeated the US judoka Jake Flores in the final .

In the summer of 1999 Poulot returned to the super-lightweight. At the Universiade in July 1999, he won a bronze medal. In August he won the final of the Pan American Games against the Brazilian Denílson Lourenço . At the World Championships in Birmingham he won the final against the Japanese Kazuhiko Tokuno . The following year, Poulot reached the semifinals at the Olympic Games in Sydney with three wins and was defeated there by the Japanese Tadahiro Nomura . With a victory over the Kazakhs Bazarbek Donbay Poulot secured a bronze medal. In 2002 Poulot won the World Cup in Budapest, shortly afterwards his international career ended.
