Yasuhiko Moriwaki

Yasuhiko Moriwaki ( Japanese 森 脇 保 彦 Moriwaki Yasuhiko ; * May 7, 1952 ) is a former Japanese judoka . He was world champion in 1981 and third in the super lightweight in 1979.

Athletic career

Yasuhiko Moriwaki was the 1974 student world champion in lightweight. In 1976 he defeated the French Guy Delvingt in the final of the Tournoi de Paris .

With the reorganization of the weight classes, Moriwaki started in 1977 in the newly introduced super light weight. In this weight class he won the Tournoi de Paris in 1977, this time defeating the French Jean-Jacques Mounier in the final . In 1978 he lost to his compatriot Katsumi Suzuki in the final of the Jigoro Kano Cup . At the 1979 World Championships in Paris, Moriwaki was defeated by Frenchman Thierry Rey in the round of 16 , but fought his way through to the bronze medal in the hope round . In 1980 Moriwaki missed participation in the Moscow Olympics because of the Olympic boycott . Moriwaki was the Japanese super lightweight champion in 1977 and 1980, and in 1981 he lost to Hatsuyuki Hamada in the final . Nevertheless, he entered the 1981 World Championships in Maastricht . There he defeated Peter Jupke from the Federal Republic of Germany in the quarterfinals and the Italian Felice Mariani in the semifinals . With his final victory over Pavel Petřikov from Czechoslovakia, he won the gold medal. At the end of 1981 Moriwaki finished second again in the Jigoro Kano Cup after losing to his compatriot Kenichi Haraguchi in the final.
