Ryuju Nagayama

Ryūju Nagayama ( Japanese 永 山 竜 樹 Nagayama Ryūju ; * April 15, 1996 ) is a Japanese judoka . In 2018 and 2019 he won a bronze medal at the world championships.

Athletic career

Ryūju Nagayama was 2011 U17 world champion in the weight class up to 50 kilograms. In 2012 and 2013 he fought in the weight class up to 55 kilograms. He was U20 Asian champion in 2012 and fifth in the U21 World Championships in 2013. Since 2015 he has been fighting in the weight class up to 60 kilograms, the lightest men's weight class among adults. In 2015 he won the U21 World Championships. In 2016 he won the final of the Grand Slam tournament in Tokyo against his compatriot Naohisa Takato . In 2017 he won the Japanese championships and the Grand Slam tournament in Yekaterinburg. At the 2017 World Championships , he was eliminated in the round of 16 against the Mongols Boldbaatar Ganbat . At the end of the year he won the World Masters tournament in Saint Petersburg.

At the beginning of 2018 Nagayama defeated the Russian Robert Mschwidobadze in the final of the Grand Slam tournament in Düsseldorf . At the 2018 World Championships in Baku, he defeated the North Korean Kim Yong-gwon in the quarter -finals . After his semi-final defeat by Naohisa Takato, he won the battle for bronze against South Korean Lee Ha-rim . At the end of 2018 he won the Grand Slam tournament in Osaka, where he defeated the Russian Iago Abuladze in the final . In early 2019 he won the final of the Grand Slam tournament in Düsseldorf against Robert Mschwidobadse. In April he won the Japanese championships. At the 2019 World Championships in Tokyo, he defeated the Kazakhs Jeldos Smetow in the quarter-finals . In the semifinals he was defeated by the Georgian Luchum Tschchwimiani , in the battle for bronze he defeated Naohisa Takato.
