history

EWE TEL was founded on September 17, 1996 as a wholly-owned subsidiary of the parent company EWE AG . The aim is to market and sell telecommunication services in the Ems-Weser-Elbe area. The idea behind it was based on EWE AG's own telecommunications network, which has been used for internal communication for more than fifty years.

When the telecommunications market was released on January 1, 1998, EWE TEL acted as a network operator ( call by call and preselection ). Contrary to the market trend at the time (“he who digs, loses”), EWE and EWE TEL continued to expand their own telecommunications infrastructure. In 2001 EWE AG acquired 75% of the shares in Bremer nordCom GmbH and 100% of the shares in WICOM GmbH, which was founded in 1996 in Wilhelmshaven . At the same time, the marketing of ADSL products for private customers began.

In February 2002 the company welcomed the 100,000 customers. In the same year, EWE AG acquired one hundred percent of the shares in “BREKOM GmbH” and 75% of “osnatel GmbH”. On November 1, 2004, EWE TEL started a direct cooperation with the mobile network operator Vodafone . Since December 31, 2006, EWE TEL has been serving more than 300,000 existing customers.

On August 26, 2008, EWE TEL and "Teleos GmbH & Co. KG", based in Herford, merged into one company. The two regional telecommunications companies were merged with retroactive effect from January 1, 2008 and have been operating as "EWE TEL GmbH" ever since. Teleos was initially continued as a brand of EWE TEL GmbH. Since June 1, 2011, the services in the Ostwestfalen-Lippe area have been offered under the EWE brand.

Also in 2008, EWE TEL acquired a majority stake in "Martens Gesellschaft für Antennen und Kabelanlagen mbH", a regional cable network operator in Hamburg and the surrounding area with its own fiber optic network . Martens was sold to ACN Telekabel Holding GmbH in June 2011 .

Osnatel GmbH has been 100% owned by EWE TEL since January 2009 and was merged with EWE TEL GmbH in June 2009 with retroactive effect from January 2009.

EWE TEL GmbH has been offering its products under the EWE brand since June 2011. According to the company, over 150 million euros has been invested in broadband expansion in recent years. This makes EWE TEL one of the largest infrastructure providers in Germany.

In September 2015, the Business Communication Company from Braunschweig was merged with EWE TEL GmbH.
