BioMed Central ( BMC ) is a commercial scientific journal publisher based in the UK that publishes over 200 open access journals in the fields of biology and medicine . As an open access publisher, BioMed Central makes all scientific publications available on the Internet free of charge, in contrast to traditional publishers such as Elsevier or Springer-Verlag . The costs incurred are covered by fees borne by the publisher. Publications are subjected to an equally demanding peer review as with traditional specialist publishers.

history

BioMed Central was founded in April 2000 by Vitek Tracz .

In October 2008 the publishing group Springer Science + Business Media (now Springer Nature ) took over BioMed Central.

Magazines

BioMed Central's major journals are Genome Biology , Genome Medicine , Arthritis Research & Therapy , Breast Cancer Research, and Critical Care .
