Overview of cable network operators
Germany
Operator of the original from the early 1980s by the German Post Office later or Deutsche Telekom AG structured cable TV network
Main operators of network level 2 and network level 3 as well as other nationally important cable network operators (sorted by size of the respective networks):
- Vodafone GmbH ( active in all federal states through the majority of shares in Kabel Deutschland (2015) and the acquisition of Unitymedia (2019))
- Tele Columbus AG with its end customer brand Pÿur , which operates the formerly independent cable network operator and brands of Primacom / Deutsche Telekabel (nationwide with a focus on Berlin , Brandenburg , Thuringia , Saxony , Saxony-Anhalt , Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania , Hamburg , North Rhine-Westphalia and Hesse ) as well as the Pepcom Group (holding company for local providers KMS ( Munich ), FAKS ( Frankfurt (Oder) ), TKN ( Hennigsdorf ), KW ( Wittenberge ), KRR (Rheinruhr), KCR ( Nierstein ), KKG ( Güstrow ), REKA ( Kamenz ), KNS ( Bad Salzungen , Walldorf, Meiningen ), NEFtv ( Nuremberg , Erlangen , Fürth ), HL Komm ( Leipzig ))
In 1997 the Monopoly Commission at the time announced that the then network operator Deutsche Telekom would have to sell its cable television network, and in 1998 the EU Commission prohibited the creation of a media platform for German providers Deutsche Telekom, Bertelsmann and the Kirch Group .
From 2003 this led to more competition. There were u. a. iesy (1999) in Hesse, Kabel Baden-Württemberg (2000) in Baden-Württemberg and ish (2001) in North Rhine-Westphalia (which later became part of Unity Media) and Kabel Deutschland (2003).
In 2011, Kabel BW (originally Kabel Baden-Württemberg ) was taken over by Liberty Global and merged with Unitymedia to Unitymedia KabelBW on July 1, 2012.
In September 2013 Vodafone achieved a 75 percent majority stake in the German company Kabel Deutschland. Since September 2, 2015, Vodafone Kabel Deutschland GmbH has been responsible for fixed-line cable and cable TV offers.
On May 9, 2018 it was announced that Unitymedia would be sold to the British Vodafone. The merger of Vodafone Kabel Deutschland and Unitymedia creates a monopoly in the German cable television market. The approval of the EU competition authorities has been granted. As of the end of July 2019, Unitymedia GmbH is a 100% subsidiary of Vodafone.
