KG (short Cables & Media Service or KMS ) is a cable operator under the umbrella of the Tele Columbus Group, in Munich in competition with Vodafone cable Germany a cable television network to HFC operates basis and about radio, Offers television, internet and telephony. Under the brands “cablesurf.de” and “cablefon.de”, the corresponding products were made available for the entire Pepcom group at the time, which was merged into the newly created umbrella brand Pÿur on October 4, 2017 . Furthermore, KMS operates as a so-called NE-4 operator and as an antenna construction company.

Internet

History

In autumn 1997, KMS was one of the first providers in Germany to offer bidirectional broadband Internet access in the DOCSIS standard using a cable modem via its cable television network with return channel capability . At the time, this was called Cablesurf plus to differentiate it from the cablesurf variant, which was still offered with an ISDN return channel. Today cablesurf is not only available in Munich, but is also taken over and offered by various smaller local cable network operators in around 50 German cities in a franchising process . The cheaper public tariffs from cablesurf were initially not available to tenants in the area of the then franchising procedure on a quota basis. For example, the Nuremberg housing association Noris e. G. only waived commission marketing of these NEFtv internet tariffs in 2009 . In contrast to the competition, many Internet offers were also available at relatively low cost without a long-term contract term.

Current

Since April 2017, KMS has been offering Internet access with transmission rates of up to 400,000 kbit / s in certain expansion areas.

Telephony

The Cablefon brand also offers telephony via cable on a VoIP basis. It is only available as a bundle with a flat rate for the German landline network. The cable modems for both products are only rented for an additional fee and are not part of the contract.

Digital television

A special feature of the digital television offerings in DVB-C standard via this cable network operator was that commercial free TV programs from KMS were fed in without basic encryption. This has now become the standard for all German cable network operators. Initially, KMS did not broadcast a NIT with DVB-C , so that some LCD televisions with built-in DVB-C tuners, whose limited software did not allow a complete frequency search, could not find all program packages ( transponders ). An NIT is now being broadcast and TV manufacturers have improved their software.

The high-resolution HDTV versions of certain German commercial, advertising-financed television channels are only offered in encrypted form, as is the case with satellite and other cable network operators. The restrictions with regard to time shift and recording restrictions required by these broadcasters are implemented in a similar way to the HD + platform, based on the KabelKiosk platform from Eutelsat. In addition, Sky and cable kiosk pay TV packages as well as own compilations of foreign language programs are offered.
