Peter Mullan (born November 2, 1959 in Peterhead , Scotland ) is a Scottish actor and director .

Career

Mullan is the sixth of eight children in an extended working class family. His father worked at the University of Glasgow as a technician. Initially living in his native Peterhead , the family later moved to the south of Glasgow . Mullan's childhood was negatively influenced by his alcoholic , tyrannical father and so he joined a criminal street gang as a teenager. At first he worked as a doorman . After his father's death, Mullan began studying history and drama at the University of Glasgow.

He started acting at university and continued this activity after graduation. In the 1990s, Mullan appeared mainly in supporting roles, including Braveheart by Mel Gibson and Trainspotting by Danny Boyle . His final breakthrough came in 1998 with the social drama My Name is Joe by Ken Loach . For this role he was awarded Best Actor at the Cannes Festival in 1998 and was also nominated for the European Film Prize.

Since then he has been a sought-after character actor both in Europe and in Hollywood and has appeared in several other films, often in leading roles. As a director for the film The Merciless Sisters , for which he also co-wrote the script, he received a Golden Lion at the Venice International Film Festival in 2002 . In 2010, Mullan played the Death Eater Yaxley in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 1 , whom he re-impersonated in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2 in 2011 .

His work includes more than 75 film and television productions.

Private

As a Marxist , Mullan was a leading figure in a left theater movement in Scotland and criticized the Tony Blair government . In 2009 he was involved with many other actors in a protest against the BBC because of its refusal to send donations to the crisis area of Gaza . He is an avowed supporter of the football club Celtic FC .

Peter Mullan was married to Ann Swan from 1989 to 2006. They have three children together. From 2007 to 2011 he lived with Robina Qureshi. They have a daughter together.

Mullan has been dating New Zealand actress Robyn Malcolm since 2012.
