Feinde - Hostiles (original title Hostiles , English for "enemies") is a historically critical western drama directed by Scott Cooper . The dark epic film set at the end of the 19th century shows the enmity between the white occupiers of the North American West and the indigenous peoples, characterized by unimaginable violence, as well as the gradual approach of mortal enemies to the figure of the notorious US Army captain and his arch enemy, a Cheyenne chief. The film premiered on September 2, 2017 at the Telluride Film Festival and was subsequently shown at the Toronto International Film Festival before it hit cinemas nationwide in early 2018. The film start in Germany was May 31, 2018.

action

Summer of 1892 in the New Mexico Territory . The US Army Captain Joseph "Joe" J. Blocker is charged with the detained four soldiers for seven years, cancer Cheyenne -Häuptling Yellow Hawk and four family members in the sacred tribal area Valley of the Bears in Montana to guide so that the Chief can die in the land of his forefathers. After many years in the Indian Wars, the two men initially encounter each other with distrust and deep dislike, both of whom regard each other as a brutal butcher. On the way, the group discovers the distraught Rosalee Quaid in her burned down farmhouse. Her husband Wesley and their three young children were murdered by Comanches . She joins the trek. Blocker and Yellow Hawk, once bitter opponents, must learn to trust each other. Therefore, after an attack by Komantschen, they form a community of convenience in order to defy the dangers of their further journey and to defend themselves against attackers. During a stopover in Fort Winslow, Blocker also takes criminal Charles Wills with him, who is to be brought to his trial. Two soldiers die in Wills' attempt to escape, including Sergeant Thomas Metz, one of Blocker's oldest friends.

Ultimately, the remaining men and women manage to reach the Valley of the Bears. Blocker and Yellow Hawk make peace with one another in mutual respect; shortly afterwards the chief dies. At the holy place, the mourning party is disturbed by the white settler Cyrus Lounde and his three sons, who claim the Cheyenne land for themselves. The conflict escalates and all but Joe Blocker, Rosalee Quaid and Little Bear, the grandson of Yellow Hawk, are killed.

The film closes with a farewell scene at the train station. Rosalee leaves the Wild West with Little Bear and tearfully says goodbye to the blocker who remains behind. At the last moment he changes his mind and jumps on the train that is already moving.

production

It was directed by Scott Cooper , who also wrote the screenplay for the film based on an idea from Donald Stewart , who died in 1999 . The film music was composed by Max Richter . The recording was made with the US-American country-singer-songwriter and Oscar winner Ryan Bingham , who contributed the song How Shall a Sparrow Fly and is also involved in the film. Bingham had to the film Crazy Heart from 2009 together with T-Bone Burnett the song The Weary Kind for Cooper's contributed, which was awarded as part of the Academy Awards, the ceremony of the Golden Globe and the Grammy Awards. At the end of December 2017, Deutsche Grammophon released How Shall a Sparrow Fly . This song is also included on the soundtrack, which comprises a total of 19 pieces of music and was released on CD by Deutsche Grammophon on February 9, 2018. The soundtrack was released for download a few weeks earlier. In a review by hr2-kultur it was said of Richter's work: “The British composer's music sounds gloomy, is very reserved: elegiac soundscapes, occasionally permeated by percussion elements. The music doesn't scratch the sandy surface of the desert, it goes much deeper and reveals the abysses of the characters. The landscape is another main character in the film. The multiple award-winning composer gives it a lot of space to atmospherically and densely charge the loneliness and the roughness of nature. "

Filming took place from late July 2016 to late September 2016 in New Mexico, Arizona, and Colorado.

The film premiered on September 2, 2017 at the Telluride Film Festival and was screened at the Toronto International Film Festival from September 11, 2017 . In October and November 2017, the film was presented as part of the official competition at the Festa del Cinema di Roma. Hostiles was released in cinemas across the US on January 26, 2018 and launched in Germany on May 31, 2018.

Age rating

In the US, the MPAA gave the film an R rating for depicting violence, which corresponds to a rating of 17 and over. In Germany, the film was approved for people aged 16 and over . The statement of reasons for approval states: “With many classic motifs of its genre and in a predominantly calm narrative style, the film uses ambivalent characters to differentiate between violence and its consequences for victims and perpetrators. The clear positioning against violence is also understandable to young viewers. Nevertheless, the gloomy, intense atmosphere and some drastic, albeit never voyeuristically staged, violent scenes can overwhelm children under the age of 16. ”Krischan Koch from NDR Info explains that director Scott Cooper does not shy away from violent scenes when he shows a bloody Indian attack right from the start thereby dismantling a romanticized image of the Wild West: “Here there are no majestically scurrying buffalo herds and also no optimistic pioneer pathos. There is a bitter war between the Indians and the conquerors, claiming innumerable deaths and traumatizing the officer Blocker. "

Reviews and grossing results

Todd McCarthy of The Hollywood Reporter speaks of a sad and consistently compelling western in a world full of beauty, tears and blood. The filmmaker's strong dramatic dynamism and intense preoccupation with the topic enriched the presentation of the story of the last phase of the American resistance in the 1890s. The film is therefore more suitable for a western audience and less for younger viewers, says McCarthy.

Patrick Seyboth from epd Film thinks that Scott Cooper handles the classic western topoi and images with ease, takes up motifs from John Ford's cavalry westerns to Robert Aldrich's No Mercy for Ulzana to Meek's Cutoff by Kelly Reichardt to deal with the violent ones To treat the soul of the genre from within, as it were. He left his cameraman Masanobu Takayanagi space for magnificent landscape panoramas as well as for earthy-realistic close-ups, which were also convincing thanks to the attention to detail and the conscientious reproduction of the language and rituals of the Cheyenne, said Seyboth. Precisely because the staging is characterized by elegiac calm over long stretches, the incursions of violence seem all the more brutal and senseless. Seyboth sums up that Cooper also succeeded in highlighting the crimes and racism of whites against the indigenous people as the basis of violence.

Krischan Koch from NDR Info says that Cooper succeeded in taking breathtaking landscape shots, but the film does not conjure up a myth, but rather is the very topical plea for understanding and a rejection of division and racism: "Powerful visuals and emotional, revealingly realistic, but also conciliatory." The film could become a classic of the Western genre, Koch continued. He explains to the main actors that Christian Bale plays “wonderfully taciturn, with a deeply hurt look, and Wes Studi , who actually belongs to the Cheyenne tribe” [sic!] And who already shone in 1990 in Dances with Wolves , is a charismatic opponent.

The worldwide revenue of the film from theatrical screenings is around 36 million US dollars.
