- Berlin / Germany : The Bundesrat approves the nuclear phase-out , which the Bundestag decided in December 2001. The phase-out legislation takes the place of the nuclear Promotion Act and provides that the 19 nuclear power plants in the Federal Republic go to 2021 from the network.

- Amsterdam / Netherlands : Willem-Alexander von Oranien-Nassau , the Crown Prince of the Netherlands, marries the Argentine Máxima Zorreguieta Cerruti in the New Church of Amsterdam .
- Arabian Gulf : The frigates Bavaria , Cologne and Emden of the Bundeswehr reach their area of operations in the Arabian Gulf with two escort ships as part of the international security support force in the war in Afghanistan .
- Moxico / Angola : Units of the state Forças Armadas Angolanas shoot Jonas Savimbi , the leader of the rebel group Unita .

- New Orleans / United States : The Super Bowl XXXVI in American football between the New England Patriots and the St. Louis Rams ends at 8:17 pm.
- Stockholm / Sweden : In the final of the Handball - European Championship defeating Swedish men's national team , the German team after extra time 33:31 and the fourth time Handball European Championship.

- Kabul / Afghanistan : Taliban Foreign Minister Wakil Ahmed Mutawakil faces the interim government. This hands him over to the US Army.
- Salt Lake City / United States : The opening ceremony of the 2002 Winter Olympics will take place in the capital of the US state Utah .

- Bamako / Mali : Defending champion Cameroon wins the final of the 23rd African Cup of Nations with a win on penalties against Senegal .
Monday February 11, 2002
- Düsseldorf / Germany : The Higher Regional Court of North Rhine-Westphalia declares the computer search that was carried out after the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 in the USA to be partly unlawful. The inclusion of German nationals in particular was disproportionate.
- Karlsruhe / Germany : With regard to the NPD ban proceedings , the Federal Government, Bundestag and Bundesrat assure the Constitutional Court that the V-men used had no controlling influence on the party's actions. However, the prohibition proceedings are discontinued a year later because of these V-men.

- The Hague / Netherlands : The trial against the former Yugoslav President Slobodan Milošević begins before the UN war crimes tribunal . He rejects a defense lawyer as a matter of principle, as he regards the procedure as “lynching”. Milošević is charged with the expulsion and murder of Albanians in Kosovo and the genocide in Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina .
- Lorestan / Iran : When a Tupolev Tu-154 of Iran Airtours crashes, all 117 passengers are killed in the west of the country. It shattered on a mountainside west of the city of Khorramabad .

- Wiesbaden / Germany : The State Court of Hesse declares the state elections of February 7, 1999 to be valid, although it became known that the victorious CDU partially financed the election campaign with black money. In this election, Roland Koch replaced Hans Eichel from the SPD as Prime Minister.

- Manama / Bahrain : The emirate is transformed into a constitutional kingdom. The constitution is reactivated and a two-chamber parliament is established.
Saturday February 16, 2002
- Berlin / Germany : By awarding the Golden Bear walking 52. Berlin International Film Festival to a close. For the first time since 1990, two films have received the award: the Japanese cartoon Spirited Away from the Ghibli studio and the British - Irish co-production Bloody Sunday by director Paul Greengrass .
- Karnai / Palestinian Autonomous Territories : In a suicide attack on the shopping center of the Israeli settlement in the West Bank , the attacker kills two Israelis.

- La Paz / Bolivia : There is a flood in the seat of government, killing around 60 people.
- Solar system : NASA 's 2001 Mars Odyssey probe , which has been orbiting Mars since October 2001 , begins mapping the surface of Mars.

- Al-Jiza / Egypt : At least 380 people die in a fire in an overcrowded passenger train in the city of Al-Ayyat.
- Prague / Czech Republic : President Miloš Zeman relativized his statement about Sudeten Germans that their “punishment” after the Second World War was “mild” during a visit by the German Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs, Joschka Fischer . For the Schröder government of the Federal Republic of Germany , dealing with the anti-German statements poses a risk for the upcoming federal election , because those expelled from Eastern and Central Europe after 1945 form a strong group of voters.

- Colombo / Sri Lanka : The ceasefire brokered by Norway between the government and Tamil rebels comes into force. The civil war had lasted 19 years and killed around 69,000 people.
- Kiel / Germany : Blind singer Corinna May wins the preliminary round of the Eurovision Song Contest . In the previous year she was runner-up and had to admit defeat to Stefan Raab . The final will take place in Tallinn in May 2002 .

- Basel / Switzerland : In a joint operation, the German and Swiss police can seize the Nebra sky disk , which was found during a robbery in 1999 . The Saxon-Anhalt state archaeologist Meller appeared to have met with the fenders, a museum educator and a teacher, in a Basel hotel. The two later received suspended sentences of twelve and six months respectively.
- Bogotá / Colombia : Colombian presidential candidate Íngrid Betancourt and her campaign manager Clara Rojas are kidnapped by left-wing FARC rebels as they approached the rebel-controlled area.

- Rawalpindi / Pakistan : Twelve Shiites are murdered in an attack on a mosque .

- Godhra / India : 59 Hindu pilgrims died when a Muslim mob set fire to several railway wagons . Immediately afterwards, uprisings against Muslims break out.
- Los Angeles / United States : At the ceremony of Grammy Awards 2002 is Alicia Keys with five awards the most successful musician, u. a. her song Fallin was awarded “Song of the Year”. In the “Album of the Year” category, the soundtrack for the film O Brother, Where Art Thou? - A Mississippi odyssey .
- Potsdam / Germany : The regional court sentenced the former building minister of Brandenburg Jochen Wolf to five years imprisonment for inciting the murder of his wife.

- Berlin / Germany : In his speech to the German Bundestag, the Secretary General of the United Nations, Kofi Annan, praised Germany's role in securing peace in the world.
