The 5th edition of the men's handball European championship was held in Sweden in 2002 and took place from January 25th to February 3rd. The Swedish national handball team won the final over Germany. Switzerland was eliminated after the preliminary round, Austria could not qualify for the final round.

Main round
The main round games took place in Gothenburg and Västerås. The twelve qualified teams from the preliminary round were divided into two groups. In group I the first three teams of groups A and B played, in group II the first of groups C and D. The points from the preliminary round that were scored against the other teams that had also reached the main round were taken over . The first and second placed in each group advanced to the semi-finals, the other teams played the other places among themselves.
