Patrekur Jóhannesson (born July 7, 1972 in Reykjavík , Iceland ) is an Icelandic handball coach and former national player.

Career

The 1.95 m back left played for UMF Stjarnan and KA Akureyri in his home country and won the Icelandic Cup four times. In the 1995/1996 season he was voted Iceland's handball player of the year. He then moved to the German handball league for TUSEM Essen . After seven years he went to the Spanish ASOBAL league to Bidasoa Irún , but returned to GWD Minden in Germany after just one season . He let his playing career end as a playing assistant coach at his hometown club Stjarnan.

With the Icelandic national team , the 241-time national player finished fourth at the 1992 Olympic Games and the 2002 European Championship .

Patrekur Jóhannesson was the coach of the Austrian national team between November 2011 and March 2019 , with which he qualified for the European Championship in 2014 and 2018 and for the World Championship in 2015 and 2019 . At the same time he coached Valur Reykjavík until 2013 and Haukar Hafnarfjörður from summer 2013 , with whom he won the Icelandic Cup in 2014 and was runner-up. After Haukar won the Icelandic Championship under his leadership in 2015, he stopped working there. Since the 2017/18 season he has been coaching the Icelandic first division club UMF Selfoss . Under his leadership, Selfoss won the Icelandic Championship in 2019. From July 2019 to February 2020 he coached the Danish first division club Skjern Håndbold . In summer 2020 he will take over the coaching position from the Icelandic first division club UMF Stjarnan.
