biography

Volker Zerbe as managing director of TBV Lemgo

Volker Zerbe attended Engelbert-Kaempfer-Gymnasium in Lemgo, where he also graduated from high school.

The left-hander played for TV Lemgo until 1984 and then switched to the youth team at TBV Lemgo , where he played in the handball Bundesliga from 1986 to 2006 throughout his professional career . Since 1996 he has been the captain of the team. He was considered one of the world's best defenders. In 1977 he scored goals in 586 games in the first Bundesliga, 3 of them seven meters. This makes him the field player with the second most Bundesliga appearances, the seventh best goalscorer in Bundesliga history and the third best field goalscorer. With a total of 1018 penalty minutes, he holds the Bundesliga record.

At the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens he won the silver medal with the team and was awarded the silver laurel leaf on March 16, 2005 - also with the team.

For the national team, Zerbe threw 777 goals in 284 appearances.

On June 4, 2006, he ended his career as an active handball player with a farewell game. Zerbes shirt number 11 was only given to Holger Glandorf again at TBV Lemgo in February 2009 . In addition, the Heldmanskamphalle in Lemgo was renamed "Volker-Zerbe-Halle".

Even after the end of his active career, Volker Zerbe stayed in handball in various positions. He was appointed World Cup ambassador for the Ostwestfalen-Lippe region and has been managing director and sporting director at TBV Lemgo since the 2006/07 season. In addition, after Volker Mudrow's dismissal in January 2007, he took over the position of interim trainer at TBV Lemgo , which he also held as head coach in the 2007/08 season after Peter Meisinger's dismissal at the end of October 2007 until the end of the year. On January 1, 2008, he was able to sign his former club and national team colleague Markus Baur as a coach. In 2012 his contract with TBV Lemgo was terminated. Zerbe has been sports coordinator at Füchsen Berlin since July 2013 . Since November 2013 he has been playing for the second team at Füchse Berlin. His nephew Lukas Zerbe is also a handball player and plays for TBV Lemgo-Lippe .
