The 16th men's handball European championship is to be held in Germany from January 12th to 28th, 2024 . For the first time, Germany will host a European men's handball championship .
Host
The Congress of the European Handball Federation (EHF) awarded the event during its session on June 20, 2018 in the Scottish city of Glasgow . The application for the European Championship by Germany prevailed with 27:19 votes against the joint application of Denmark and Switzerland .
Participating Nations
As an organizer, Germany has already qualified for the 2024 European Championship. The remaining 23 participants are expected to be determined during the European Championship qualification phase in the 2023/24 season.

Venues
Seven cities were named as possible venues during the application. This includes all venues for the 2019 World Cup with Munich , Berlin , Hamburg and Cologne , plus Hanover , Mannheim and Düsseldorf . All halls hold at least 10,000 spectators. The opening game is planned for the Merkur Spiel-Arena in Düsseldorf . With over 50,000 seats, a new visitor world record could be set for a handball game. So far, the record set in 2014 stands at 44,189 spectators at Bundesliga game of the Rhein-Neckar Löwen against HSV Hamburg in the Frankfurt Commerzbank Arena .
At the end of October 2019, the German Handball Federation launched the location tender for the 2024 tournament. The halls must have a minimum capacity of 7500 spectators. Three to a maximum of seven venues are sought. The DHB sent the application documents to the multi-purpose halls with the minimum size. So would u. a. the Lanxess Arena in Cologne, the Mercedes-Benz-Arena and the Max-Schmeling-Halle in Berlin, the ÖVB-Arena in Bremen , the Westfalenhalle Dortmund , the Arena Leipzig , the SAP Arena in Mannheim, the ISS Dome in Düsseldorf, the Hamburg's Barclaycard Arena , the Krefeld Yayla-Arena , the Kieler Sparkassen Arena , the Olympiahalle Munich , the Arena Nürnberger Versicherung in Nuremberg , the TUI-Arena in Hanover, the SACHSENarena in Riesa and the König-Pilsener-Arena in Oberhausen are potential hosts. The application deadline is January 15, 2020. The decision on the venue should be made in the summer of that year.
