Khorramabad ( Persian خرمآباد, DMG Ḫorramābād , also Chorram- Abad , English Khorramabad ) is a city in the Zāgros Mountains in western Iran , about 50 kilometers south of Kermanshāh and about 400 kilometers southwest of the capital Tehran . It is the capital of the Lorestan province and has almost 360,000 inhabitants, mainly Lurs who speak Lorī and are Shiite Muslims .
The city is first mentioned by its modern name in the 14th century by Hamdallah Mustaufi in his work Nuzhat al-qulub . In the vicinity of the city are the ruins of Diz-i Siyāh , the former capital of the Atabegs of Kleinluristan (approx. 1184–1597). According to the orientalist Minorski , the Sassanid city of Shapurkhwast was located in the same place .
Khorramabad is not a known tourist resort, but has a very nice cityscape with attractions such as the great from the Middle Ages derived citadel Falak-ol-Aflak ( the highest heaven ), is now located in a museum.
Khorramabad is the regional industrial center , but this is limited to the processing of agricultural products.
With the construction of an expressway at the end of the 19th century, this secluded region became more accessible. The travel time from the Persian Gulf via Shiraz to Tehran was 40 to 50 days and was reduced to 12 days by the new road.
