Pratica di Mare is a district of Pomezia in the metropolitan city of Rome in central Italy . It is located 30 km south of Rome and 5 km from the Tyrrhenian Sea .

The small town is believed to be the successor to the ancient city of Lavinium , remains of which have been excavated in the area. According to this, Pratica would occupy the ancient Acropolis .

history

After ancient times, mentions of a Castrum Pratica appear for the first time in the 7th to 8th centuries . Between 882 and 884 Pope Marinus I gave the place to the monks of Saint Paul Outside the Walls , who stayed there until the 14th century. After that, the place changed hands between various Roman noble families. In 1526 the Massimo family had the place fortified by Antonio da Sangallo . Nevertheless, on May 9, 1588, Pratica was attacked by Algerian pirates , looted and 103 inhabitants abducted and probably sold as slaves in the Ottoman Empire .

Then Pratica came to the Borghese , who expanded the castle.

Pratica today

Today Pratica has fewer than 20 inhabitants, but is a popular destination because of some restaurants. The Castello Borghese is privately owned by a line of the Borghese family and therefore cannot be visited. In front of the Borgo is the Museo Archeologico Lavinium in a small country villa , which exhibits the many finds from the area of the ancient city of Lavinium , especially finds from the sanctuaries and graves, which represent goddesses and priestesses as well as private persons; in which many pieces of jewelry stand out in a form similar to the Etruscans. Under a protective structure, the thirteen altars can be seen, representing the Latin sanctuary for Venus and Aeneas with originally thirty altars; there is also a hero's grave, which Aeneas himself symbolizes. The Pratica di Mare military airfield is nearby
