Tulkarm ( Arabic طولكرم Tūlkarm , DMG Ṭūlkarm (often also Tulkarem )) is a city in the Palestinian Territories . Tulkarm is the seat of the Tulkarm Governorate .

origin of the name

There are two words in Tulkarm: (Tul طول) which was originally pronounced (Tur / طور) and means mountain in Arabic and Aramaic and (Krm | كرم / عنب) means “grapevine” in Arabic, so the city is roughly called “vineyard ". However, there is also an older, different view of how the city is called: "Tel-alkrm". (Tel | تل) this means “hill” in Arabic and (Al-Krm | العنب / الكرم) means “the grape” in Arabic, thus “grape hill”.

Geographical location

Tulkarm town center in winter

Tulkarm is located near the Green Line on the edge of the coastal plain in a very fertile area with a mild subtropical climate. The city is cut off from its neighboring community of Jubarah by the Israeli barrier that runs across the green line on Palestinian territory.

history

During the First World War , the city received a train station in 1915 , when the Ottoman Military Railway in Palestine drove its narrow-gauge line from the Hejaz Railway on the Haifa – Dar'a and Afula – Nablus routes south. The British advancing from the south continued their standard-gauge line coming from the Sinai Railway , re - gauging the Ottoman route from Lod to Tulkarm in the direction of Haifa . The Palestinian Railway also operated the narrow-gauge railway from Tulkarm to Maṣʿūdiyya in 1050 mm until 1946, the main line Haifa – Tulkarm – Qantara - ( Cairo ) being by far the more important. The main line from the border at Tulkarm was cut twice by the Green Line , which was fixed in the armistice agreement of 1949 as a result of the war for Israel's independence . On the Israeli side, a bypass was built for the main line in 1949 and operations resumed. So Tulkarm lost its rail connection again.
