Qantara.de ( Arabic قنطرة: Qantara = bridge) is an internet portal of Deutsche Welle , which is supposed to promote the intellectual dialogue with the culture of Islam in the languages German , English , Arabic and Turkish .

The portal goes back to an initiative of the German Foreign Ministry , in reaction to the critical development of the relationship with the Islamic world after the shock of the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 in the USA . The dialogue project has set itself the task of promoting understanding between the various cultures, with the aim of eliminating existing knowledge deficits and counteracting prejudices.

The aim of the editorial team is to enable and supervise the publication of such western and Islamic authors who seek open and respectful discussion about commonalities as well as contentious topics even in times of crisis. These included, for example, the Egyptian literary scholar Nasr Hamid Abu Zaid , the German ex-diplomat and Muslim Murad Hofmann , the Islamic theologian Halima Krausen , the conflict researcher Heiner Bielefeldt and the physicist Ernst Ulrich von Weizsäcker .

Deutsche Welle's cooperation partners in operating the platform, which has been accessible online since March 2003, are the Federal Agency for Civic Education (bpb), the Goethe Institute (GI) and the Institute for Foreign Relations (ifa); the project is funded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, this funding should expire at the end of 2014, a follow-up funding was initially uncertain. At the end of 2015, however, the project continued to receive funding from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
