Hadera (also Hadera , Hebrew חדרה[xa'dɛra], Arabic الخضيرة, Al-Ḫuḍayraḧ) is a city in northern Israel ( Haifa district ) near the Mediterranean Sea .

history

19th century

The place was founded as Moshava in 1891 . Hadera is one of the oldest yishuvim in today's Israel. The name goes back to the previous Arab settlement Hudaira (green), whose inhabitants had sold the land to the settlers. In the first few years they fought against malaria and tried to drain the surrounding swampy areas; for this purpose the eucalyptus trees , which are widespread today, were introduced and planted for the first time . The biblical sentence from Psalm 126,5 in the city coat of arms fits in with this: "Those who sow with tears will reap with joy." The first settlers received support from Baron Edmond de Rothschild , who also sponsored many other settlement projects.

The former wetlands are now cultivated land; a large proportion of the products grown are citrus fruits . Even today there is a large swampy forest area south of Hadera.

20th century

Hadera has had city administration status since 1952 .

Until the 1950s, Hadera was the capital of the Sharon Plain . However, after the founding of the state, other cities in the area (especially Netanya ) grew much faster and are now more important.

The first democratic school in Israel was founded in Hadera in 1987 , the Democratic School in Hadera .

21st century

On October 28, 2001 , security forces employed by the Palestinian Authority carried out an attack on Israelis for the first time . The two assassins drove their vehicle through Hadera and shot randomly at passers-by on the sidewalk with M-16 rapid-fire rifles. The assassins killed four women, Lidia Marco 63 years, Ayala Levy 39 years, Sima Menachem 30 years, Smadar Levy 23 years and injured 44 people, some seriously, before they could be killed by the Israeli police.

On November 29, 2001, a Palestinian suicide bomber detonated a bomb in a bus when it was passing an Israeli army training camp near Hadera. Three Israelis, including Inbal Weiss, 22 years old, and Ichiav Alshayd (28) were killed and at least nine were injured, some seriously.

On January 17, 2002, an armed Palestinian assaulted a bat mitzvah society in a dance hall in Hadera, killing six people and injuring 33. The perpetrator shot at the guests indiscriminately with a rapid-fire rifle. Aharon Ben Yisrael-Alis (32), Dina Binayaw die (48), Edward (48) and Antoli Bakschayaw (63), Avi Yazadi (25) and Boris Melihow (56) died in the attack. The al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades confessed to the attack.

economy

The important power station Orot Rabin (Hebrew for "Rabin's lights"), named after the murdered Israeli Prime Minister Yitzchak Rabin, is located on the Mediterranean coast of Chaderas . The power plant burns imported coal , which is discharged from the ships directly at an adjacent pier. It is visible from afar because of the four high chimneys and is therefore a well-known landmark in north-central Israel.

The nearby Carmel Mountains and the excavated ruins of the Caesarea, a few kilometers to the northwest, with many remains from Roman times, are particularly interesting for tourists.
