biography
Kachlon was born in Hadera as one of seven children of a Jewish immigrant from Libya . From 1978 to 1986 he served in the Israel Defense Forces . After his military service he studied political science at the University of Haifa and graduated with a bachelor's degree before studying law in Netanya .
In 2003 he was a member of the Knesset for the first time. He even became deputy spokesman for the Knesset. In the run-up to the 2006 elections, he surprisingly won third place on the Likud list at the nomination party conference. After the 2009 elections, he regained his Knesset seat and became Minister of Communications.
In the Knesset, Kachlon is committed to improving the financial situation of economically disadvantaged groups in Israeli society. In particular, he advocates low bank fees and cheaper electricity for the socially disadvantaged.
As communications minister, Kachlon was responsible for filling key positions in the public broadcaster Israel Broadcasting Authority with people close to his party. Statements that became public during a presidium meeting of the Likud in December 2011 confirmed corresponding allegations of the opposition, which saw in Kachlon's actions a politicization of the station contrary to the pluralistic principles of public service broadcasting . In January 2012, the President of the National Audit Office, who also serves as the state ombudsman , who is independent from the government , announced an official investigation into the allegations.
On January 19, 2011, Moshe Kachlon was appointed as successor to Yitzchak Herzog as Minister of Welfare . At the end of 2012, he announced his retirement from politics and no longer took part in the Israeli parliamentary elections in 2013 .
At the end of October 2014, Kachlon left Likud on the grounds that the party's social character had been lost and that right-wing extremists had gained too much influence.
He founded the new Kulanu party , whose main concern is social policy and, in particular, reducing the cost of living in Israel. In the national parliamentary election on March 17, 2015, Kulanu won 10 seats.
Kachlon is married and has three children.
