Meir Schitrit

Meir Schitrit ( Hebrew מאיר שיטרית; Born  October 10, 1948 in Ksar Es Souk , Morocco ) is an Israeli politician . Having previously been a member of the Likud bloc, he has been a member of the Kadima party since 2005 . He held various ministerial posts, most recently from July 2007 to March 2009 as Minister of the Interior and Deputy Prime Minister.

Life

Shitrit was born in Ksar Es Souk in the province of Errachidia and immigrated to Israel with his family when he was ten . He graduated with a doctorate in political science from Bar Ilan University . He is married and has two children.

He began his political career in 1974 as mayor of the city of Javne and held this office until 1987. In 1981 he was elected to the Knesset and was initially a member of the Israeli parliament until 1988. From 1988 to 1992 he was the treasurer of the Jewish Agency for Israel, after which he was re-elected to the Knesset.

In 1996, when Benjamin Netanyahu was prime minister, Shitrit was elected to head the Likud bloc. In 1998 he became Minister of Finance in Netanyahu's government and since 2001 has held various ministerial posts in two successive governments of Ariel Sharon .

In 2005, when the Kadima party was founded, Shitrit left Likud and joined the new party. After the elections in March 2006, Shitrit became Minister of Construction and Housing in the government of Ehud Olmert . When Shitrit declared during Operation Summer Rain in Gaza in July 2006 that he would oppose a possible withdrawal from Judea and Samaria (or the West Bank ), he initiated the first split in Olmert's new government.

On August 23, 2006, he was elected ad interim Minister of Justice to succeed Chaim Ramon , who had resigned three days earlier on charges of sexual assault .

On June 10, 2014, he was defeated in the second ballot in a Knesset run-off to succeed Israeli President Shimon Peres in the presidential election in Israel Reuven Rivlin ( Likud ) with 53 to 63 votes.
