Roni (Ronnie) Bar-On ( Hebrew רוני בר-און; * June 2, 1948 in Tel Aviv ) is an Israeli politician . He was a minister of his country several times.

biography

After attending school, he studied law at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and worked as a lawyer after graduating . He did his military service as a lieutenant colonel in the judicial service of the Israeli armed forces and as such was a judge at the military appeals courts in Judea , Samaria and the Gaza Strip . After completing his military service, he returned to work as a lawyer and was a member of the Central Committee of the Lawyers' Association between 1995 and 2003.

In 1997 he was briefly attorney general . From 1998 to 2001 he was Chairman of the Council for the Organization of Sports Betting .

Bar-On began his political career when he was first elected a member of the Knesset in February 2003 and has since represented the Likud after his re-election in April 2006 and February 2009 , then for a short time the Achrajut Le'umit and finally the Kadima . At times he was group leader of the Achrajut Le'umit.

Between 2003 and 2006 he chaired the General Committee ( House Committee ) and the United Committee on the Budget of the Knesset, as well as a member of numerous other committees.

In January 2006 he was first appointed to a government by Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and was Minister for National Infrastructure and Minister for Science and Technology until May 2006.

In the subsequent government of Prime Minister Ehud Olmert , he became Minister of the Interior in May 2006, before he was Minister of Finance from July 4, 2007 to March 31, 2009 after a government reshuffle . In February 2007 he rejected his appointment as Minister of Justice to succeed Tzipi Livni .

He is currently a member of numerous Knesset committees such as the General Committee, the Committee on Foreign Affairs and Defense, and the Committee on Constitution, Law and Justice.

In addition, Bar-On was involved in several associations and organizations such as the Regional Committee of the Jerusalem Lawyers' Association , the Council for Administrative Courts, the Advisory Commission of the Authority for Government Enterprises, the Commission on Public Defense and Administration of the Israel Football Association and the Beitar Jerusalem Football Club . He was also the vice chairman of the board of directors of the Jerusalem Theater, director and public representative of the Magen Zahav pension fund, and a board member of Bank Mishkan .
