In 1933 he received a doctorate in philosophy at the University of Leipzig . He continued his studies at the rabbi seminar in Berlin and became a rabbi in 1938. Political career

In Israel, Burg joined HaPo'el haMisrachi , a moderate-left religious Zionist party. In addition to three other religious parties, Hapoel HaMisrachi was elected on a joint list ( United Religious Front ) in the first Knesset elections in 1949 . The list won 16 seats, and Burg got a seat in the Knesset and became its vice-speaker. In the cabinet formed by David Ben-Gurion , Burg became Minister of Agriculture and Minister of Rationing and Supply . After the ruling coalition broke, Burg was not considered by the new coalition government .

In the 1951 elections , the HaPo'el haMisrachi party stood alone and won eight seats. Burg remained in the Knesset and became Minister of Health in the third government . During the further legislative period of the second Knesset , Burg was Minister of Post in the fourth , fifth and sixth governments.

After the third parliamentary elections on July 26, 1955, Burg was re-elected to the Knesset and post minister in the seventh and eighth cabinets again in the coalition negotiations . He retained the post of post minister until July 1, 1958.

In June 1956, the Hapoel HaMisrachi merged with its ideological twin, the Misrachi party to form the National Religious Party (NRP, Mafdal ). He became its chairman in 1970, succeeding Chaim-Moshe Shapira , and held this office until 1986 , when he resigned from all his offices.

Josef Burg was re-elected until the 1984 elections ( 11th Knesset ). He took over the post of Minister of Welfare in the 9th , 10th , 11th , 12th , 13th , 14th and 15th governments . In the 15th government, he took over the Ministry of the Interior from the recently deceased Chaim Moshe Shapira on September 1, 1970, handing over the Ministry of Welfare to Ja'akov-Micha'el Chasani . He headed the Ministry of the Interior during the 16th , 17th , 18th , 19th and 20th governments . During the 17th government, he also took over the Ministry of Welfare from July 29, 1975 to November 4, 1975. He was also minister of religion in the 19th, 20th and 21st governments .

In 1977 he became the president of the World Misrachi Movement.
