Shulamit Aloni ( Hebrew שולמית אלוני; * November 29, 1928 in Tel Aviv ; † January 24, 2014 in Kfar Shmaryahu ) was an Israeli lawyer, human rights activist and feminist, writer and politician.

life and work

Shulamit Aloni was born in Tel Aviv in 1928. Her parents, who were from Poland, fought in the British Army during World War II . She was a member of the Hagana and the Hashomer Hatzair . After graduating from school, Shulamit Aloni became a member of the Israeli army and fought in the War of Independence . She then got involved with the children of immigrants and worked as a teacher. Her book The Citizen and His Country (1958) appeared in ten editions and became a basic text in teacher training for the Secondary School in Israel.

She also studied law and economics to become a lawyer. In 1959 Aloni became a member of the Labor Party . From 1965 to 1996 she was a member of the Knesset . After falling out with the leadership of the Labor Party, she founded the Ratz party , which received three seats in the Knesset, and served as a minister with no office. In 1977 the Ratz split up and their presence in parliament diminished, but in 1991 Ratz, Schinui and Mapam merged to form the Meretz party and received 12 seats in parliament in the 1992 election to the 13th Knesset . Aloni then became Minister of Education in Yitzchak Rabin's cabinet . After a year, she was forced to resign from office due to pressure from the Shas coalition party . Instead, Rabin appointed her Minister of Communications . Finally, she retired from politics in 1996. She then taught at Ben Gurion University , Tel Aviv University and Princeton .

During her lifetime she was considered a sharp critic of Israeli policy towards the Palestinians. In 2005, together with other celebrities, she founded the organization Yesh Din , which campaigns against violations of the human rights of Palestinians.

Awards

Schulamit Aloni was awarded the Bruno Kreisky Prize for Services to Human Rights (1985) and the Israel Prize (2000). In 1998 she received the Emil Grünzweig Human Rights Award for her life's work. She was an honorary doctor of the Hebrew Union College .
