Uta Klein (born December 13, 1958 in Vallendar ; † March 3, 2019 ) was a German sociologist and professor of sociology , gender and diversity at the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel .

Life

In 1982 Uta Klein completed her studies in educational sciences and sociology at the Westphalian Wilhelms University with a diploma . She then worked for about three years as a qualified pedagogue in the Warendorf women's shelter . From 1986 to 1991 she was employed as a research assistant at the Institute for German Language and Literature at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster. In 1991 she received her doctorate in sociology. From 1992 to 1999 she worked as a university assistant at the Institute for Sociology at the University of Münster.

In the period from July 1995 to October 1995 Klein built the Gender Studies at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem by a DAAD - guest lecturer with on. The following year, Klein received a fellowship from the Berlin Wissenschaftskolleg at the Van Leer Institute in Jerusalem , where she worked with other fellows on the “Europe in the Middle East” project. Her own research project related to the Israeli military and the military in Israeli society.

In 1999, she completed her habilitation with a thesis on the military and gender in Israel at the University of Münster. Klein was supported by a habilitation grant from the German Research Foundation (DFG).

In the summer semester 2000, Klein had a Aigner-Rollett - Guest Professor for Gender Studies at the Institute of Economic and Social History and winter term 2001/2002 a visiting professor at the Institute of Sociology at the Karl-Franzens-University of Graz in Austria . Since September 2009, Klein has been a professor with the denomination for sociology, gender and diversity and director at the Institute for Social Sciences at the Christian Albrechts University in Kiel. She also headed the Gender Research Group there. In June 2011 she was a visiting scholar at the European Union Center of Excellence (EUCE) at York University in Toronto . In 2012 she received a nomination for the Alfred Grosser Chair for 2012/2013 at Sciences Po , which she did not accept. She regularly taught in the master's program “Interdisciplinary Gender Studies” at the Karl-Franzens University in Graz.

Klein died after a long, serious illness at the age of 60 and was buried in the Alten-St.-Matthäus-Kirchhof in Berlin .

In 2012, Klein was appointed to the Monitoring Committee for the Schleswig-Holstein Integration Action Plan. She was a liaison professor , a member of the advisory board and a member of the selection committee for doctoral and study grants in the Heinrich Böll Foundation's scholarship system . From 2006 to 2009, Klein was Chairwoman of the Senate of Kiel University of Applied Sciences. In this role, she played a key role in the profile strategy of the Kiel University of Applied Sciences, for which the university was selected and awarded a prize in a nationwide competition among 64 universities and technical colleges by the Stifterverband für die Deutsche Wissenschaft and the Heinz Nixdorf Foundation .

From 1999 to 2012, Klein was a member of the International Advisory Editors of Men and Masculinities . She was a member of the research committee Armed Forces and Conflict Resolution of the International Sociological Association (ISA) and in the gender research section of the German Society for Sociology (DGS) . Until 2008, Klein was deputy chairwoman of the German-Israeli working group for peace in the Middle East (DIAK). In 1997, Klein was involved in the development of recommendations and guidelines on Male Roles and Masculinities in the Perspective of a Culture of Peace in the UNESCO Expert Commission in the Culture of Peace program.
