Denomination (science)

The term denomination describes the explicit definition of a professorship . The denomination makes it clear to which field of work the holder of the professorship researches and teaches.

The denomination is determined by the university management together with the department in accordance with the development planning for the staffing and is mentioned in the job advertisement . At some universities, the decision is made by the academic senate . Professorships can be divided into partial or full denomination.

Full denomination

A full denomination is a professorship with a clear definition for a specific focus of a scientific subject. There are a variety of denominations depending on the discipline. Examples:

Part denomination

In the case of a partial denomination, a task definition is formulated as an addition. Example formulations are "Professorship for [...] with a focus on [...]" or with "special consideration of [...]".
