Life

Rafael Pinchasi's family immigrated to Israel in 1950. He was one of the founders of the Shas party and was the deputy mayor of Bnei Brak . In 1984 he became a member of the Knesset on Shas's electoral list and was appointed Deputy Minister for Welfare and Social Services on December 2, 1985; he held this office until December 22, 1988. He retained his seat in the 1988 elections and became President of Parliament . On January 15, 1990, he was appointed Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs, which he held until June 11, 1990. He was reappointed Minister of Communications on June 11 of the same year. However, he only held this office until July 13, 1992, since the Israeli elections for 1992 had already started. He was confirmed in his mandate in the 1992 elections and was appointed Deputy Minister of Finance on August 4 of the same year. He held this office until he was appointed Deputy Minister for Religious Services on December 31, 1992, a position he held until September 14, 1993. Pinchasi was forced to give up his seat in September 1993 after he was convicted by the Israeli Supreme Court of misrepresentation, an offense that was deemed to be morally reprehensible ("moral turpitude"). He was re-elected in 1996, but lost his seat in the 1999 elections. In 2008 he was appointed chairman of the Tel Aviv Cemetery Council.
