Ariel Atias ( Hebrew אריאל אטיאס; * November 13, 1970 in Tel Aviv ) is an Israeli politician who was a member of the Knesset for the Shas party and Minister for Building and Housing.

Life

Atias grew up in Bnei Berak ; his parents immigrated to Israel from Morocco in 1968 .

Atias was elected to the Knesset through the list of Shas after the 2006 elections. In May 2006 he was appointed Minister of Communications. In 2007 he tried to get a law through that would censor the representation of violence and sex as well as gambling on the Internet.

After the 2009 elections , he was able to keep his seat in parliament and was appointed Minister for Housing.

Atias advocates spatial separation of both Jewish and Arab residents of Israel and religious and secular Jews. Speaking at a conference of the Israel Bar Association, he said:

"I, as an Orthodox Jew , don't think that religious Jews should live in the same neighborhood as secular couples in order to avoid unnecessary tension."

He also said of the Arab population of Israel:

"I see it as a national duty to prevent the expansion of a population group who, to put it mildly, do not love the State of Israel."

Atias is married with four children and lives in Jerusalem .
