Abraham Ofer ( Hebrew אברהם עופר; * 1922 in Chorostków ; † January 3, 1977 in Tel Aviv , born Abraham Hirsch ) was an Israeli politician and from June 3, 1974 until his voluntary death on January 3, 1977, the country's housing minister.

Life

Abraham Ofer was born in 1922 as Abraham Hirsch in Chorostków ( Poland , today Chorostkiw in Ukraine ). In 1933, during the fifth Aliyah , he emigrated from Poland to the British Mandate of Palestine . There he studied at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem . He joined the paramilitary Hagana in 1937. He is one of the re-founders of the kibbutz Hamadia in 1942. He also belonged to the 1,944 young management team ( English Young Leadership ) of Mifleget Poalei Eretz Yisrael and the founders of the Hakfar HaJarok ( Hebrew הכפר הירוק).

During the Palestinian War, he served as a lieutenant colonel in the Israeli Navy and was the first in command of the Eilat Naval Base . He was elected party secretary in the Tel Aviv district of the Mifleget Poalei Erez Yisrael party in 1952. During his tenure in the Ministry of Agriculture , this began in 1958, he founded the poultry -Rat ( English Poultry Council ) and was Deputy Director of Economic Affairs. He was a member of the negotiating delegation with the European Economic Community in 1964. At the end of 1964 he became general manager of the Ashdod Company , the port operator in Ashdod . In 1965 he was elected to the city council and deputy mayor of Tel Aviv. He was Deputy Mayor until he was appointed Managing Director of Shikun Ovdim in 1967.

In the elections on October 28, 1969 , he was elected to the Seventh Knesset for the HaMa'arach , an electoral alliance of the left-wing Zionist parties Awoda and Mapam . In the following years he campaigned for a change in the electoral system in Israel to the D'Hondt process , together with Yohanan Bader ( Gachal ). The electoral system was implemented for the December 31, 1973 election of the Eighth Knesset , in which Abraham Ofer also entered. In the following coalition negotiations for the new government , he was given the office of Minister of Housing , which he held from June 3, 1974 until his death on January 3, 1977.

Due to the investigation against Abraham Ofer in November / December 1976, triggered by the same people as in the Yadlin affair in October 1976, Abraham Ofer was unable to fight the allegations against him ( English to bear any more ) and passed away voluntarily on January 3, 1977.
