Silvan Schalom ( Hebrew סילבן שלום; born on August 4, 1958 in Gabès , Tunisia ) was Israel's 16th Foreign Minister from February 2003 to January 2006 . He had previously served as Finance Minister in Ariel Sharon’s cabinet for two years. He is a member of the conservative party alliance Likud . On March 31, 2009 he became Vice Prime Minister. From 2013 to May 2015 he was Minister for Energy and Water Supply. He was Minister of the Interior since May 2015. On December 20, 2015, after allegations by several women of having sexually molested them, he announced his resignation as Minister of the Interior and announced that he would also resign from his parliamentary mandate.

Life

Shalom immigrated to Israel in 1959. At the age of 18 he was drafted into the Israel Defense Forces and attained the rank of non-commissioned officer . After his military service, he took up studies at the Ben Gurion University of the Negev in Beersheba , which he completed with a BA in economics . Shalom later attended Tel Aviv University , where he graduated with a law degree as well as an MA in social planning.

Shalom initially worked as a journalist. In 1992 he was elected to the Knesset for the Likud . Within the Likud, shalom is a prominent representative of the Sephardic belief system. On March 7, 2001 he took over the post of finance minister from Avraham Schochat . In the course of a cabinet reshuffle, he unexpectedly succeeded Benjamin Netanyahu as Foreign Minister on March 28, 2003 . After Sharon left the Likud, Shalom was considered one of the candidates for his successor as party chairman. The election of the Moroccan Amir Peretz as party leader of the Avoda suggested a Sephardic Likud candidate, but the well-known “hardliner” Benjamin Netanyahu was elected instead.

On January 13, 2006, Shalom resigned from the post of Foreign Minister.

The party alliance Likud won a total of 27 seats in the elections for the 18th Knesset on February 10, 2009 . After the formation of the second Netanyahu government , he became Vice Prime Minister (alongside Moshe Jaalon ). The governing coalition includes a. the Jisra'el Beitenu party of Avigdor Lieberman, the Labor Party with party leader Ehud Barak and the orthodox Shas party. The cabinet has 30 ministerial posts.

From March 18, 2013 to May 2015, he was Minister for Energy and Water Supply .

Private

Silvan Shalom is with the talk show presenter Judy Shalom Nir-Mozes married. The couple have five children and live in Ramat Gan .
