Life

Schlomo Ben Ami was born in Tangier into a Sephardic family. He immigrated to Israel in 1955. His first major post was that of the Israeli ambassador to Spain from 1987 to 1991. He then went into politics and was elected to the Knesset in 1996 .

When the Labor Party under Ehud Barak in July 1999 came to power, was Ben Ami Minister of Public Security. In August 2000, after David Levy's resignation , he first became Israeli Foreign Minister and in November 2000 he officially succeeded him. As acting foreign minister he negotiated with the Palestinians, but at the same time was held responsible by the Or Commission for the October 2000 uprisings in which Arabs were killed by the Israeli police . Nevertheless, he is not considered a hardliner in Arab-Israeli relations. During the Barak government, he was Shimon Peres ' political rival .

Ben Ami remained Minister for Foreign Affairs and Security until March 2001. But he refused to join Ariel Sharon’s government and therefore resigned from the Labor Party. He then wrote highly regarded books on the Middle East conflict . He is an active member of the Club of Rome and Vice President of the Toledo International Center for Peace (CITpax) , a non-profit organization whose aim is to contribute to conflict prevention and resolution as well as to peace building. He is married and has three children.
