Daniel Abraham Yanofsky
Daniel Abraham Yanofsky (born March 26, 1925 in Brody / Poland ( Galicia ), † March 5, 2000 in Winnipeg ) was a Canadian chess player .
Daniel Yanofsky was eight months old when his parents emigrated to Canada with him .
As an 8-year-old he learned to play chess and soon turned out to be a child prodigy . At the age of 11 he already gave simultaneous performances in Winnipeg , as a 14-year-old he played for Canada at the Chess Olympiad in Buenos Aires on the 2nd board in 1939 , where he achieved a result of 85% (13.5 / 16). The then world champion Alexander Alekhine , who also took part in this tournament, predicted a bright future for Yanofsky in chess. In 1939 Canada took second place in the final group B.
Yanofsky, who was a lawyer by profession , was eight times champion of Canada , defeated the future world champion Mikhail Botvinnik in the Groningen International Tournament in 1946 , was winner of the US open championships in 1942, was the first Canadian to be named grandmaster and accepted in 1964 11 Chess Olympiads participated ( 1939 , 1954 , 1958 , 1964 , 1966 , 1968 , 1970 , 1972 , 1974 , 1976 and 1980 ).
Yanofsky's last Elo rating was 2410, but he was listed as inactive as he did not play an Elo-rated game after 1989. It reached its best Elo rating of 2460 in July 1971. Before the Elo rating was introduced, it had its best historical rating of 2618 in December 1946.
Daniel Yanofsky died at the age of 74 years on March 5, 2000, a hospital in Winnipeg to cancer .
