Kevin Spraggett (born November 10, 1954 in Montreal ) is a Canadian chess master .

Life

Spraggett began his professional career in the 1980s, winning the New York Open in 1983 , and becoming a Commonwealth Champion in 1985 . He won the Canadian Championship five times (1984, 1986, 1989, 1994 and 1996) and the Canada Open eight times (1983, 1987, 1993, 1995, 1996, 1998, 1999, 2000). Spraggett was fourth in the 1985 Taxco interzonal tournament , qualifying for the first time for the Montpellier Candidates Tournament (held that same year). He took part again in the subsequent elimination cycle and met in the first round of the candidate fights in 1988 on Andreï Sokolov , whom he sensationally defeated after playoffs. Only in the quarter-finals in 1989 Spraggett was stopped by the Russian Artur Jussupow by a narrow defeat (4-5, in Québec ).

Between 1986 and 2002 , Spraggett, who has been based in Southern Europe for several years, took part in eight Chess Olympiads for Canada (only missing in 1988), with his silver medal in 2000 for the second best individual result being his highlight so far. His Elo rating is 2561 (as of December 2014), which puts him in third place on the Canadian rankings. His highest rating to date was 2633 in January 2007.

In the British Four Nations Chess League , Spraggett played for Slough from 1998 to 2004 and won the competition in 1999 and 2000 . In Portugal he played for the team from Boavista Porto , with which he took part in the European Club Cup in 1993, in Belgium in the 2007/08 season for Cercle des Echecs de Charleroi . In the Spanish team championship he played in 1996 and 1997 for the team of CE Barcino Barcelona , with which he became champions in 1997 , in 1999 for RC Labradores Sevilla , in 2008 for Sestao XT and from 2013 to 2015 for CE Escola d'Escacs de Barcelona .
