The 1990 World Chess Championship took place from October 8th to December 30th, 1990 in New York and Lyon . World champion Garri Kasparow defeated his challenger Anatoli Karpow 12½: 11½.

qualification

Interzonal tournaments

In the interzonal tournaments with 16 to 18 participants each, the following players qualified:

Candidates tournament

The challenger of the world champion was determined in the candidates tournament according to the knockout system . The four semi-finalists from the previous cycle ( 1987 World Chess Championship ) were seeded for the first round of the Candidates Tournament: Artur Jussupow , Andreï Sokolov , Jan Timman and Rafael Vaganian . Another nine places were awarded to the top three in three interzonal tournaments . There was also a free place for the organizer, which the Canadian Kevin Spraggett took.

These 14 players played 7 winners in duels in the first round. In the second round, ex-world champion Anatoli Karpow was added, so that the 8 places for the quarter-finals were complete. The last sixteen and quarter finals were limited to 6 games; the semifinals were scheduled for 8 games and the final for 12 games. In the event of a tie, there was an extension of 2 games and, if necessary, further extensions through quick games with increasingly shorter time to consider until the first game that was decided.

prehistory

The two opponents made no secret of their mutual dislike. Shortly before the start of the match, an interview appeared in “ Spiegel ” in which they underlined this again. SPIEGEL: Mr. Karpow, how would you react if you and your wife went to a restaurant here in Hamburg, all tables were occupied and the Kasparovs were sitting at a table with two empty chairs: would you sit down with them or go out? KARPOW: I can do without any food intake for days.

Organization and rules

The match should last a maximum of 24 games and should be ended prematurely as soon as a player with at least 12½ points is in the lead or has achieved 6 wins. The thinking time was two and a half hours for the first 40 moves; after an interruption , one hour each for 16 trains. In the event of a 12:12, Kasparov would keep his title. The prize money should be divided in a ratio of 5: 3 between the winner and the loser; in the event of a tie everyone would receive half. The first 12 games took place in New York City , the following in Lyon . As Chief Judge acted as early as 1987 the Dutchman Geurt Gijssen .

Kasparov did not compete under the flag of the Soviet Union (and also not under the flag of the Russian Soviet Republic ), but under the white-blue-red flag of Russia .

Course of the world championship

Kasparov took the lead with a convincing attack in the second game. A spectacular queen sacrifice against two minor pieces in the third game gave him an advantage here too, but after an inaccuracy by Kasparov in the all-inclusive move, Karpov was able to keep the game drawn . In the fourth game Kasparov attacked vehemently again, but had to be happy in the end to be able to save himself in continuous chess.

The following games were a little quieter. A major mistake by the world champion brought Karpow the equalizer in the seventh game. A series of eight draw games followed. In the 14th game, Kasparov surprised with his opening choice: the Scottish game was last used in a world championship match in 1892. In the 16th game, too, he took up Scottish, and after breaking off twice , the world champion achieved a study win in the 102nd move. This was the longest winning game ever played in a World Chess Championship.

Karpov countered in the 17th game, in which he gave Kasparov no chance, but in the 18th game Kasparov refuted an opening variant prepared by Karpov and took the lead again. In the 19th game, Kasparov was clearly superior when he unexpectedly offered a draw on move 39, just one move before the game could be abandoned - out of exhaustion, as he later said. In a press conference during their competition in 1992, Spasski and Fischer stated that this draw had been agreed. In the 20th game Kasparov landed another convincing attack victory. A draw in the 22nd game led to the 12:10, which secured the title defense. In the 23rd game, Karpov shortened the gap. In the last game Kasparov offered a draw if he won the position and thus secured the victory to 12½: 11½.

All seven winning games were won with the white pieces.
