A hanging game referred to a game of chess that was abandoned in order to be continued at a later point in time.

Until the mid-1990s, the rules of chess stipulated that chess games had to be interrupted, i.e. postponed, after a certain length of the game, with a time limit of 2.5 hours for 40 moves, for example after five hours of playing time. The analysis of hanging games played an important role in high-class tournaments and competitions. The player often worked with teammates, coaches or seconds . The advent of chess programs then led to a change in the rules of chess in the 1990s, so that hanging games are no longer common today.

When a game is canceled, the player whose turn it was made a binding note of his next move (the sealed move ) on his game sheet without the opponent being able to see the move. Both lot forms were put in an envelope. On the envelope, the position, names of the players, time spent thinking, possible draw offer , which player was on which move and the time and place of the resumption of the game were noted. When the game was resumed, the player whose turn it was had to make the exact move that he had noted. This ensured that neither player knew the position in which he had to make his next move, which would otherwise have been a great advantage in the analysis. An incorrectly or ambiguously noted delivery move resulted in the loss of the lot.

Robert Huebner is of the opinion that drafts have an above-average error rate. He justifies this with the end of the time emergency phase : “Now it is important to regain an understanding of the situation, to design a new game plan, to calculate deeply, to make a decision that can sometimes be extremely momentous - while all around the players and spectators, freed from the pressure of tension, are released Break out croaking and cackling ”.

In common parlance, the term hanging game is used in a figurative sense for situations in which a goal-oriented process is slow and laborious.
