The 1987 World Chess Championship took place in Seville from October 12 to December 18, 1987 . Here the world champion Garri Kasparow and his challenger Anatoli Karpow split 12:12, which Kasparow kept his world title.
qualification
The usual schedule in the three-year World Cup cycle was quite mixed up: the 1984 World Chess Championship lasted until 1985, when it was canceled and rescheduled in a controversial decision. After Kasparov's victory at the 1985 World Cup , there had been a revenge match in 1986 , which Kasparov also won.
According to the usual cycle, however, the qualification for the World Cup in 1987 had started without Kasparov or Karpov being able to participate. It was therefore decided that the candidate competitions should take place first and that the loser of the 1986 rematch against the winner of the Candidates Tournament should contest a superfinal to determine the challenger for 1987.
Interzonal tournaments
The first interzonal tournament took place in Tunis in April and May 1985 as a round-robin tournament with 18 participants. The four best players Artur Jussupow , Alexander Beliavsky , Lajos Portisch and Alexander Tschernin qualified for the Candidates Tournament . In June 1985 the second interzonal tournament followed in Taxco, Mexico, where Jan Timman , Jesús Nogueiras , Michail Tal and Kevin Spraggett qualified out of 16 players . The third and last interzonal tournament was held in Biel in July 1985, where Rafael Vaganian , Yasser Seirawan , Andreï Sokolov and Nigel Short qualified from 16 participants .
Candidates tournament
The FIDE organized the Candidates Tournament 1985 in Montpellier . Of the 16 participants, 12 were qualified through the interzonal tournaments; additionally took Boris Spassky , Vasily Smyslov , Viktor Korchnoi and ZOLTÁN RIBLI part. The four first placed were to determine the challenger of the loser from the rematch match Kasparov-Karpov in 1986. The winners were Artur Yusupov , Rafael Vaganian and Andreï Sokolov with 9 points, followed by Jan Timman and Mikhail Tal , each with 8½ points. A playoff between Timman and Tal ended 3: 3, whereupon the final evaluation of the tournament decided in favor of Timman.

Organization and rules
It was played in the specially renovated Teatro Lope de Vega in the center of Seville. The match should last a maximum of 24 games and be ended prematurely as soon as a player with at least 12½ points is in the lead without being caught. In the event of a 12:12, Kasparov would keep his title. As Chief Judge of the Dutch acted Geurt Gijssen .
Psychological aspects
The 1987 World Chess Championship was shaped by psychological factors in advance. Kasparov's book Political Game , in which he strongly criticized Karpov, appeared a week before the start of the World Cup. Karpow, on the other hand, relied on psychological aspects during the competition, so in the opinion of Lothar Nikolaiczuk he saved energy for the 23rd game in the event of an equalization in order to rely there as a white player on his solid nerves. If this comment corresponds to reality, Karpov's calculation worked, but Kasparov was able to equalize again in the last game and thus defend the title.
Course of the world championship
The match started furiously. After just 5 games, 3 wins were recorded. The other games were also hard-fought. However, none of the opponents managed to gain more than one point and after 22 games it was 11:11. In the last two games, the events overturned: In game 23 Kasparov sacrificed a rook in a time constraint , but his combination was brilliantly refuted by Karpov. In the last game, Kasparov managed to use positional maneuvers to win a pawn and finally the game, thus saving his title.

consequences
Given the tight result, it was speculated whether Kasparov could stay on the chess throne for a long time. At the 1990 World Chess Championship , the last world championship duel between the two opponents, however, he succeeded again in defeating Karpov and after his division of the chess world he remained world champion until the 2000 World Chess Championship.
