The world chess championship in 1894 was a duel between the reigning world chess champion Wilhelm Steinitz and his challenger Emanuel Lasker . Lasker won and became the second world chess champion in history.
Organization and rules
The game was played in New York (game 1-8), Philadelphia (game 9-11) and Montreal (game 12-19).
The winner should be the one who would have won 10 games first. It was also agreed that in the event of a defeat, Steinitz would have the right to take revenge.

The competition began on March 15, 1894. On May 26, Lasker was the new world champion.

consequences
In accordance with the contract, Lasker Steinitz granted a revenge match in 1896 , but was able to retain his title with a convincing victory. Lasker remained world champion for a full 27 years until he competed against José Raúl Capablanca in 1921 .
