The 1958 world chess championship was a rematch between the reigning world chess champion Vasily Smyslow and his predecessor Mikhail Botvinnik . Botvinnik won and took back the title that he had lost to Smyslow in the 1957 World Cup fight .

prehistory

The right to a rematch was first agreed in the Steinitz-Lasker competition (1894) and also in the Alekhine-Euwe competition (1935) . Ultimately, this was a privilege of the reigning world champion, because a challenger had to defeat the world champion twice, while a win (and even a draw) in one match was enough to defend his title. When FIDE determined the modalities for the World Cup in the time without world champions, it had adopted this rule.

When Smyslow defeated the reigning world champion Botvinnik in 1957, this rule came into effect for the first time.

Organization and rules

The competition took place in Moscow . The competition was scheduled for 24 games, with a tie Smyslow would keep his title.

course

The match started on March 4th. Right at the beginning Botvinnik pulled away with 3 wins - a lead that Smyslow could not catch up. On May 9th, Botvinnik was the winner.

After that, the right of revenge was abolished, and in the 1963 World Cup fight he lost his title to Tigran Petrosian . Smyslow subsequently managed to qualify for the candidates ' tournament several times, but it was no longer enough to qualify for a World Cup fight.
