At the world chess championship in 1892 , world champion Wilhelm Steinitz successfully defended his title against Michail Tschigorin . The duel took place in Havana instead

prehistory

For the second time since 1889, the very wealthy Havana chess club had agreed to finance and organize a world championship match. Steinitz had originally chosen the German master Siegbert Tarrasch as his opponent , but he shied away from the long sea voyage. After his defeat in the World Cup fight in 1889 , Chigorin got the chance to take revenge.

With Tschigorin Steinitz had fought a telegraphic match over two games in April 1890 to decide a dispute about two opening variants, and lost.

Organization and rules

The competition should last until 20 games have been played or one of the players has won 10 games. In the event of a 10:10, play should continue until one of the players has won 10 games.

course

The match was dramatic. The 14-year-old challenger won right at the beginning and stayed in the lead until Steinitz was able to equalize to 8: 8 in the 20th game and took the lead 9: 8 in the 22nd game. In the following game Chigorin won a piece and had a clear winning position, but then overlooked an elementary mate in two moves and lost.
