The 1937 world chess championship was a rematch between world champion Max Euwe and his predecessor Alexander Alekhine . Alekhine managed to regain the title.
prehistory
After Euwe had won the 1935 World Cup fight against Alekhine, he agreed to give him revenge. This was by no means a given; Alekhine himself had refused to give his predecessor Capablanca such a revenge. It was the last world championship fight in which the reigning world champion had control of the title and was able to set the modalities.
Organization and rules
The game was played in several cities in the Netherlands . The winner should be the one who was the first to achieve 15½ points and 6 winning games.
course
The match lasted from October 5 to December 4, 1937. Up to the 20th game (score 9:11) Euwe was able to make the match largely even. But then he suffered four defeats in five games and lost accordingly.

consequences
Alekhine retained the world title until his death in 1946 without having to fight another world championship match. He was succeeded by Mikhail Botvinnik , who won the world championship tournament in 1948 .
