The 2014 World Chess Championship was held in Sochi from November 7 to 23, 2014 as a duel between defending champion Magnus Carlsen and Viswanathan Anand as the challenger. After eleven of twelve scheduled games, Carlsen was unassailable with 6.5: 4.5 in the lead and thus defended his world title.

venue

The application for the event was originally advertised on January 10, 2014 with a deadline of March 10, 2014, which was later extended to April 30, 2014. This deadline also passed without an organizer being found. In June 2014, FIDE announced that the competition would be held in the Olympic Village in Sochi and that the budget would be three million US dollars .

Carlsen let a contract signing period expire at the end of August. He criticized the venue and the reduction in prize money. He also demanded that the sponsors of the competition be disclosed. Although Carlsen's demands were not met, the world champion signed the contract on September 7, 2014, just a few hours before a new deadline, which obliged him to play against Anand in Sochi in November. He thus avoided a withdrawal of his World Cup title by FIDE, as had already happened once in the Fischer case in 1975 .

Candidates tournament

In the candidates tournament, which took place from March 12th to 30th, 2014 in Khanty-Mansiysk , eight players competed in two rounds, each against each other .

Participants were: Viswanathan Anand (ex-world champion), Wladimir Kramnik and Dmitri Andreikin (qualified via the Chess World Cup 2013 ), Wesselin Topalow and Şəhriyar Məmmədyarov (qualified via the FIDE Grand Prix 2012-2013 ), Levon Aronjan and Sergei Karjakin (qualified on the world rankings) and Pjotr Swidler (nominated by the organizer). After only 13 of 14 rounds, Anand led unmatched with 8 points and in the end qualified with 8.5 points from 14 games for a rematch against Carlsen, who had taken the world title from him the previous year .

The opponents

Before the competition, Anand and Carlsen had played a total of 40 games against each other with a classic time limit. Of these, Carlsen and Anand won six and 28 ended draws.

Elo development

mode

Magnus Carlsen at the award ceremony.

A maximum of twelve games were scheduled with a time of 120 minutes / 40 moves + 60 minutes / 20 moves + 15 minutes / rest of the game. From move 60, each player had an increment of 30 seconds per move.

In the event of a tie after twelve games, a tie-break would have been played: First four games of rapid chess with a time limit of 25 minutes + 10 seconds increment. If there was another tie, up to five blitz matches (5 minutes + 3 seconds increment) would have been played. If all five mini-matches of two games in blitz chess had also ended in a draw, the world champion in Armaggedon would have been determined.

Time schedule

The games began at 3 p.m. local time (1 p.m. CET). The main referee of the duel for the world title was Andrzej Filipowicz from Poland .

The award ceremony took place on November 25th. For the first time, Vladimir Putin, the head of state of the host country, was present at the award ceremony.

Carlsen had Peter Heine Nielsen and Jon Ludvig Hammer as seconds .

Anand managed to get his c-pawn on the 7th row through a pawn sacrifice , which Carlsen could only block with his best piece, the queen. The challenger brought something new on move 20 compared to the draw game Lewon Aronjan - Michael Adams , Bilbao 2013, in which Black had already been under great pressure. With the more active pieces and the longer remaining time to think about it , Anand finally won material and the game, which meant that he equalized the overall score to 1½ to 1½.

Anand came off the opening well. On move 27 he sacrificed quality with Rb4 and thus received a passed pawn on the queenside. Carlsen showed, however, through precise play that this was not enough to compensate for the material disadvantage . With 45. Kc3 he prevented the conversion of the black pawn. Anand gave up immediately, which decided the world championship fight.
