At the world chess championship in 1889 , world champion Wilhelm Steinitz successfully defended his title against Michail Tschigorin . The duel for the world title in chess , initially set for 20 games, extended over 17 games, which were played between January 20 and February 24, 1889. With 10.5 to 6.5 points Steinitz was unassailable in the lead and remained world champion.

prehistory

Steinitz, who had won the world championship title against Johannes Hermann Zukertort at the very first chess world championship in 1886 , stayed in Havana in 1887 , where he gave simultaneous performances and overcame the local champions. The local chess club then offered him to organize a competition between the world champion and an equal master, and promised considerable prize money. Steinitz should be free to choose his opponent.

Steinitz accepted this tempting offer and chose Michael Chigorin for his first title defense, who was considered the best chess player in Russia and who had beaten him twice at the London tournament in 1883 . At the same time, it was a duel between two philosophies: Steinitz represented a strictly "scientific" doctrine according to which there is always a best move and spectacular combinations are only possible if the opponent makes a mistake. Tschigorin, on the other hand, was considered a " romantic " who propagated the idea of creative chess.

course

The match was scheduled for 20 games and began on January 20, 1889. Tschigorin got off to a good start and took the lead three times with 1: 0, 2: 1 and 4: 3. But then Steinitz won three times in a row. He did the same again with a score of 7: 6. In the 17th game Steinitz secured the title with a draw . It was the only draw in this competition.
