Chess tournament in London 1883

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The chess tournament in London 1883 was a double- round chess tournament between fourteen of the strongest players in the world, held from April 26th to June 23rd, 1883 in the Victoria Hall of the London Criterion . Johannes Hermann Zukertort won the tournament three points ahead of Wilhelm Steinitz , who was previously the strongest player in the world , after Zukertort took opiates with 22/26 points at the end of the tournament and lost the last three rounds. The significant tournament win and his well-known win against Joseph Henry Blackburne led to Zukertort seeing himself as Champion of the World . As a result of the rivalry, the first world chess championship came about in 1886 .

Draw games were repeated up to twice, with the result of the third game also counting for a draw.

Mechanical double clocks were used for the first time .

Seven prizes were available for the top finishers of up to £ 250. The worse players received consolation prizes from a prize fund of an additional £ 50 . The beauty prize went to Samuel Rosenthal for a game with the black stones against Steinitz.

Five games were played each week, from noon to 5 p.m. and from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. Draw games were repeated on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Blackburne and Rosenthal did not repeat a draw game that no longer influenced the standings, while Skipworth left the tournament prematurely.
