Berthold English

Berthold English (born July 9, 1851 in Hotzenplotz , Moravian-Silesia , † October 19, 1897 in Vienna ) was an Austrian chess master .

Berthold Englisch was a stockbroker by profession in Vienna and came from a Jewish family.

He surprisingly won the first congress of the German Chess Federation in Leipzig in 1879 before Louis Paulsen . However, this was to remain his greatest tournament success. In the following year he shared first place at the tournament in Wiesbaden with Blackburne and Adolf Schwarz . In 1890 he was defeated in a duel over five games in Vienna by the later world champion Emanuel Lasker (+0 = 3 −2) , while in 1896 he was in a tie with Harry Nelson Pillsbury (+0 = 5 −0 ) in the same place ). His balanced record of six matches in tournament games with Wilhelm Steinitz (+1 = 4 −1) and his victory over Adolf Anderssen in the Paris tournament in 1878 were remarkable .

The English best historical rating was 2690 (February 1897). However, he already achieved his best position on the subsequently calculated world rankings well before that, namely in August and September 1881, with second place.

He died in October 1897, just a few weeks after he had to break off the international championship tournament of the Berlin Chess Society due to illness.
