José de Jesús Nogueiras Santiago (born July 17, 1959 in Remedios , Province of Villa Clara ) is a Cuban chess player .

In 1977 Nogueiras was named International Master . In 1979 he received the grandmaster title . Since 2005 he has also held the title of FIDE Senior Trainer.

In 1985 he was at the interzonal tournament in Taxco with 10.5 out of 15 games second behind Jan Timman and qualified for the candidates tournament Montpellier 1985 , where he scored 6 points from 15 games. In the Central American zone tournament in 1987 in Bayamo , he was third behind Armando Rodríguez and Alonso Zapata, together with Walter Arencibia and Guillermo García González . Against Arencibia and García Nogueiras was able to prevail in a playoff. At the subsequent interzonal tournament in Zagreb in 1987 , he scored 11.5 out of 24 games.

He has achieved numerous good placements at international tournaments. He won the Capablanca memorial tournament in Cienfuegos in 1984. He was third in 1986 in Szirák behind Lew Psachis and József Pintér with Ian Rogers , and fourth in 1987 in Wijk aan Zee behind Viktor Kortschnoi , Nigel Short and Ulf Andersson . His position on the world rankings enabled Nogueiras to take part in the Chess World Cup in 1988/89 . In 1991 he won the Miguel Najdorf memorial tournament in Buenos Aires together with Michail Tal and Julio Granda and in 1997 the open Carlos Torre memorial tournament in Mérida .

Nogueiras has represented his country at 14 chess Olympiads so far , namely in Malta 1980 , Lucerne 1982 , Thessaloniki 1984 , Dubai 1986 , Thessaloniki 1988 , Novi Sad 1990 , Moscow 1994 , Yerevan 1996 , Elista 1998 , Istanbul 2000 , Bled 2002 , Calvia 2004 , Turin 2006 and Dresden 2008 . He also took part in the team world championships in 1989, 1993, 1997 (both in Lucerne ) and 2005 in Be'er Scheva , the Pan American team championships in Junín 1987, Guarapuava 1991, Cascavel 1995, Mérida 2000, all of which he won with Cuba, and the in Mexico took part in the Under-26 World Team Championships in 1978 and 1980. In the Spanish team championship in 1997 he played for Labradores Sevilla .

He was able to win the Cuban championships in 1977, 1978, 1984 (divided), 1991 and 2000.

Nogueiras is known for his cautious, positional style and good opening skills . With White he mostly plays closed openings , while with Black he strives for the French Defense , where he is an expert on the Winawer variant .
