Carlos Torre Repetto (born November 23, 1905 in Mérida , † March 19, 1978 ibid) was a Mexican chess player .
Career
His international chess career only lasted a little over a year. After he won a tournament in Detroit convincingly in 1924, leaving Samuel Reshevsky behind, among others , he played in tournaments in Baden-Baden , Marienbad and Moscow in 1925 . His spectacular win against former world champion Emanuel Lasker , whom he defeated with a dilemma , caused a sensation there .
Due to a mental illness, the cause of which is not exactly known, he withdrew from tournament chess shortly afterwards. As confirmed by eyewitness reports, it can be considered that Torre had a disturbed eating behavior and mainly ate sweets. After taking off his clothes in public on a bus ride through New York , he was admitted to hospital for a few weeks. After his release, he returned to Mexico and spent the rest of his life there without ever playing a serious game of chess again.
In 1963 he became International Master , and shortly before his death, the World Chess Federation, FIDE , awarded him the honorary title of Grand Master in 1977 . His best historical rating was 2668, which he achieved in May 1926.
An opening system that is still popular today is named after him, the torre attack . He also introduced the move sequence 1. d2 – d4 Ng8 – f6 2. c2 – c4 Nb8 – c6 in Baden-Baden in 1925, which is known as the Mexican Defense (usually called Black knight's tango ).
